District of Columbia LLC status check

What keeps a District of Columbia LLC or corporation in good standing, what happens if a filing is missed, and how to check your status yourself. Taken from the official rules published by DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP), Corporations Division.

Check your District of Columbia status

On the state’s own site: open the official business search (DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP), Corporations Division). Search your exact registered name and read the status field.

The way a lender sees it: a lender’s system doesn’t just read your status — it matches your exact legal name, your filing, your domain and your email against each other. Run the same checks below.

Report is every two years, not annual. DLCP says filings moved from CorpOnline to BOSS (boss.dc.gov), but its 'Search Registered Businesses' link still goes to CorpOnline. Franchise taxes are filed with OTR, not DLCP; when the LLC tax applies was not confirmed.

Missed it? What happens, and how to fix it

If a filing is missed

$100 late fee. DLCP may start administrative dissolution if the report is not delivered, or a fee/penalty not paid, within 5 months after it is due (D.C. Code 29-106.01).

Getting back in good standing

Reinstatement (after administrative dissolution) — state fee $300. Domestic entities file form GN-5 (foreign: FN-6) on BOSS; missing back reports can also be filed there.

Why lenders check this before anyone reads your application

An automated know-your-business check compares what you put on an application against the state’s record. A status that isn’t active and in good standing, or a legal name that differs from your filing by a comma or a suffix, is a common silent reason for a decline.

Fixing your status costs nothing beyond the state’s own fees; you don’t need to pay anyone to do it for you.
